Billedindbrenning

Billedindbrenning, also known as image persistence or screen burn-in, is a phenomenon where a faint, static image remains visible on a display screen even after the image has changed. This occurs when pixels in certain areas of the screen are exposed to the same bright content for extended periods. The phosphors or organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) in those pixels can degrade unevenly, leading to a permanent or semi-permanent discoloration.

The likelihood of billedindbrenning depends on the display technology. Older cathode-ray tube (CRT) monitors were more susceptible due to the nature of their phosphor coatings. Modern LCD and LED displays are generally less prone to this issue, but it can still occur, particularly with OLED panels, which are known for their vibrant colors and deep blacks but can be more sensitive to static content.

Symptoms of billedindbrenning include ghosting or a shadow of a previously displayed image. For instance, if a channel logo or a status bar has been displayed for a very long time, it might become visible on other content. The severity can range from barely noticeable to quite apparent.

Preventative measures include avoiding displaying static images for prolonged durations, varying the content shown on the screen, and utilizing screen saver features that regularly change the displayed image. Many modern displays also incorporate pixel-shifting or screen-refreshing technologies to mitigate the risk of billedindbrenning. If burn-in does occur, sometimes displaying a dynamic, full-screen image or video with varied colors for an extended period can help to even out pixel wear, though severe cases may be permanent.
