Bilderverstärker

Bilderverstärker, also known as image intensifiers, are electronic devices that amplify low levels of light to produce a brighter image. They are commonly used in applications where visibility is limited, such as night vision systems and medical imaging. The core principle of a Bilderverstärker involves converting incoming photons into electrons, amplifying these electrons, and then converting them back into visible light.

The process typically begins with a photocathode, which emits electrons when struck by photons. These electrons are then accelerated and focused by an electrostatic or electromagnetic field. A microchannel plate (MCP) is often used as the amplification stage. The MCP contains a large number of tiny, parallel channels coated with a resistive material. As electrons pass through these channels, they collide with the channel walls, releasing secondary electrons. This cascade effect greatly amplifies the number of electrons. Finally, these amplified electrons strike a phosphor screen, which emits visible light, creating a brighter image that can be viewed by the human eye or captured by a camera.

Bilderverstärker have been instrumental in various fields. In military and law enforcement, they enable operation and surveillance in darkness. In astronomy, they allow for the observation of faint celestial objects. In medicine, they are used in fluoroscopy to visualize internal body structures during procedures, reducing the patient's exposure to X-rays.
