Biafran

Biafran refers to anything relating to Biafra, the secessionist state that declared independence from Nigeria in 1967. It existed from 1967 to 1970 in the eastern region of Nigeria and was led by Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu. The declaration followed ethnic violence, political instability, and economic tension affecting the Igbo people and other groups in the area.

During its brief existence, Biafra established its own government and institutions, and issued postage stamps as a symbol of sovereignty. It did not gain broad international recognition and relied on support from some foreign governments and humanitarian organizations.

The Nigerian government opposed the secession and fought the Nigerian Civil War, commonly known as the Biafran War, from 1967 to 1970. The conflict included a blockade and a major famine, resulting in substantial civilian casualties and a large humanitarian response.

By 1970, Biafra surrendered and was reintegrated into Nigeria. The term Biafran remains in historical, cultural, and diaspora contexts. Some groups continue to advocate for autonomy or recognition, but there is no current independent Biafra.
