Bhavatarini

Bhavatarini is a form of the Hindu goddess Kali, specifically revered in Bengal. The name itself translates to "She who is the redeemer from the ocean of existence," highlighting her role as a liberator from the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth (samsara). In this aspect, she is depicted as the ultimate divine mother, offering salvation to her devotees.

She is typically portrayed with four arms, holding a sword and a severed head, symbolic of her power over ego and illusion. Her other two hands are often shown in gestures of blessing and protection. Unlike some more fearsome depictions of Kali, Bhavatarini is often seen as more benevolent and nurturing, emphasizing her maternal qualities.

The Dakshineswar Kali Temple in Kolkata, West Bengal, is a prominent center for the worship of Bhavatarini. The temple's founder, Rani Rashmoni, established the deity's idol there, and it has since become a major pilgrimage site. Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, a renowned spiritual figure, deeply worshipped Bhavatarini at this very temple, and his devotion significantly popularized this form of the goddess. Her worship emphasizes devotion, surrender, and the belief in her power to guide her followers to spiritual liberation.
