Bhaubeej

Bhaubeej, also known as Bhai Dooj or Yama Dwitiya, is a Hindu festival celebrated by brothers and sisters. It falls on the second day of the Kartik month in the Hindu lunar calendar, typically occurring in October or November. The festival emphasizes the bond between siblings, with sisters performing a special puja (prayer) for their brothers' long life and well-being.

The rituals usually begin with the sister applying a tilak (a mark on the forehead) to her brother. This is followed by prayers and aarti (a ritual of waving lamps). In return, the brother offers his sister gifts and promises to protect her. The festival is often celebrated with a feast, with sisters preparing special dishes for their brothers, and vice versa.

The origins of Bhaubeej are rooted in mythology. One popular legend recounts how Yama, the god of death, visited his sister Yamuna. Yamuna welcomed him with prayers and a feast, and in return, Yama granted his sister and all her descendants the boon that they would never be subjected to his wrath. Another story involves Lord Krishna visiting his sister Subhadra after defeating the demon Narakasura.

Bhaubeej is celebrated with enthusiasm across various parts of India, particularly in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, and Uttar Pradesh. While the name and specific customs might vary, the core sentiment of celebrating the sibling relationship remains constant. It's a joyous occasion that strengthens the familial ties and reaffirms the mutual love and support between brothers and sisters.
