Bewulo

Bewulo is a coastal village situated on the eastern shore of the Baltic Sea in the historical region of Pomerania. The settlement lies approximately 12 kilometres south of the regional capital and is part of the administrative district of the town of Gdańsk. As of the most recent census in 2021, the population of Bewulo was recorded at 452 residents, of which 53 percent were male and 47 percent female. The village covers an area of 3.2 square kilometres and sits at an elevation of 8 metres above sea level.

The origins of Bewulo can be traced back to the early 14th century, when it was first mentioned in a land register as a small fishing community. Over the centuries, the village developed a mixed economy based on fishing, molasses distillation, and the cultivation of hardy wheat varieties. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Bewulo became a minor port, facilitating the export of salt and timber from the surrounding forests. During World War II, the village was occupied by German forces and suffered damage to its wooden heritage structures; postwar reconstruction efforts restored many of the original wooden houses.

In contemporary times, Bewulo is known for its annual sea‑fishing festival, which attracts visitors from across the region. The village also hosts a small marine museum that documents the history of local fishing vessels. Local governance is administered by a village head elected by residents, with oversight from the Gdańsk county council. The community maintains a volunteer fire department and a welfare centre that provides social services to the elderly and low‑income families. Public transport links include a regional commuter bus that connects Bewulo to Gdańsk and nearby towns.
