Beteiligter

Beteiligter (plural Beteiligte) is a German noun derived from beteiligen ("to participate"). It denotes a person who is involved in an event, action, or legal matter. The term is broad and neutral, and it is used in both everyday language and legal discourse to refer to anyone who has a connection to a matter, not only to the principal actor.

In criminal law, the word is commonly used as a descriptive label for persons who participate in a criminal offense. It does not define a single legal status. The main formal categories of participation include Täter (the main perpetrator), Mittäter (co-perpetrators), Anstifter (instigators), and Gehilfe (aider). A person who does not stand in the role of Täter but participates is a "Beteiligter." Courts may specify the exact role (e.g., Mittäter, Gehilfe) in their rulings, but the term itself remains general.

In civil or administrative contexts, "Beteiligter" may refer to anyone with an interest in a process or outcome, such as parties to a contract, stakeholders in a project, or participants in a procedure. The precise rights and duties of a Beteiligter depend on the legal context and applicable law; it is not a formal procedural status in the same way as plaintiff or defendant.
