Bertoluccis

Bertoluccis were an Italian folk music group formed in the early 1960s in Milan. The ensemble was founded by the guitarist and composer Gianni Bertolucci, who had previously played with the traditional folk ensembles of the Lombardy region. The name of the group, a plural form of the founder’s surname, was chosen to emphasize the collective aspect of their music-making and to honor the family of musicians who influenced the band’s repertoire.

The group’s core lineup consisted of Gianni Bertolucci on guitar and vocals, Marco Rossi on mandolin, Lucia Conti on violin, and Carmelo De Luca on percussion. Their early performances at local cafés and radio stations were characterised by a raw, acoustic sound that blended regional dialect songs with contemporary social themes. In 1965 the band released their debut album, Campi e Valli, which combined traditional melodies with lyrics about rural labourers and political activism. The following year they followed up with Sulle Tracce del Passato, an album that experimented with harmonic arrangements and included a reinterpretation of the classic Italian folk protest song “La Commedia”.

Bertoluccis toured extensively across Northern Italy, often collaborating with local theatre troupes and poets. Their music was noted for its rhythmic drive and lyrical poignancy, and it influenced a generation of Italian folk revivalists. The group disbanded in 1972 after the death of Gianni Bertolucci; however, their recordings remain available on regional archives and are occasionally revived by tribute groups.
