Lavrentiy Pavlovich Beria (March 29, 1899 – December 23, 1953) was a Soviet politician and state security administrator who headed the NKVD, the Soviet secret police, from 1938 to 1945. A close associate of Joseph Stalin, he became one of the most powerful officials in the USSR during the late 1930s through the postwar period, overseeing internal security, counterintelligence, and the Gulag labor camp system. His authority extended over the deportation and management of various populations deemed politically unreliable, including Crimean Tatars, Chechens and Ingush, and other groups.
