Bergfrieds

Bergfrieds are a type of defensive tower found in medieval castles, particularly in Central Europe. The term "bergfried" is derived from the German words "berg," meaning mountain, and "fried," meaning peace or fortress. These towers were typically constructed as the central keep of a castle, providing a stronghold for the lord and his family. Bergfrieds were usually circular or polygonal in shape, with thick walls and a high roof, offering excellent defensive capabilities. They were often built using local stone and featured arrow slits, machicolations, and sometimes a drawbridge for access. The bergfried served as a symbol of the castle's power and the lord's authority, and its construction often reflected the wealth and status of the ruling family. In many cases, the bergfried was the last part of the castle to be built, indicating its importance as the final bastion of defense.
