Bergbauschlacken

Bergbauschlacken are non-metallic by-products of ore smelting, refining and coal processing produced by the mining industry. They accumulate as residues from metallurgical operations and are commonly found on slag heaps near former or current mining sites.

The material is typically rich in silicates and oxides, with components such as silica, alumina, lime, magnesia and iron oxides. The exact composition depends on the ore and process used. Slag can range from dense and glassy to more porous and weathered, and may contain trace metals or other contaminants that influence its environmental behavior when exposed to the elements.

Uses of Bergbauschlacken vary with their physical and chemical properties. They have historically been employed as construction material, for example as coarse or fine aggregate in road bases, drainage layers or backfill. In some cases, processed slag has been used in cement production or in land reclamation and civil engineering works. The suitability for reuse depends on stabilization and adherence to environmental standards.

Environmental aspects and management are important considerations. Slag heaps can pose risks through leaching of metals or acidity, particularly if the slag contains sulfide minerals. Modern approaches emphasize stabilization, controlled oxidation, capping and monitoring of groundwater and surface water. Reuse is pursued when the material meets regulatory requirements and is properly managed.

Regional and historical context: Bergbauschlacken are associated with former coal and ore mining regions in Central Europe, including areas such as the Ruhr and Saar regions.
