Bergbauort is a German term for a locality whose origin and development are tied to mining activity. A Bergbauort typically grew around one or more ore deposits, with mining operations, ore processing facilities, and related infrastructure shaping the urban layout. The defining features include housing for miners and families, workers’ clubs, churches or chapels, and support services such as markets, schools, and hospitals funded by mining companies or municipalities. The economic cycle of a Bergbauort often follows the exploitation of a particular resource; extraction peaks, followed by decline when ore bodies are exhausted or prices fall, triggering population changes and urban redevelopment.

Geographically, Bergbauorte are common in historic mining regions such as the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge), the Harz, the Ruhr area, and alpine mining districts. They may transition into modern towns or become heritage sites, with mining museums, preserved headframes, and guided tours. Some Bergbauorte have been recognized for their industrial heritage, including UNESCO World Heritage sites associated with mining and related industry, such as the Zollverein coal mine complex and the Rammelsberg mine near Goslar.
