Benmärgsaspirat

Benmärgsaspirat, often referred to as a bone marrow aspirate, is a medical procedure that involves collecting a sample of liquid bone marrow. This is typically done by inserting a needle into the bone, most commonly the iliac crest (hip bone), although other sites like the sternum or tibia can be used. The needle is then attached to a syringe, and a small amount of liquid marrow is suctioned out.

The primary purpose of obtaining a bone marrow aspirate is diagnostic. The collected sample is examined under a microscope by a pathologist or hematologist to evaluate the cells within the marrow. This examination can help diagnose a wide range of conditions, including anemias, leukemias, lymphomas, and other blood disorders. It can also be used to assess the effectiveness of treatments for these conditions or to determine the cause of unexplained fever or infection.

The procedure itself is relatively quick and is usually performed under local anesthesia to minimize discomfort. Some pressure and a brief pulling sensation may be felt during aspiration. Following the procedure, a small bruise or soreness at the puncture site is common. The results of the bone marrow aspirate are crucial for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment planning for many hematological and oncological conditions.
