Belgariads

The Belgariad is a five-volume fantasy series by American author David Eddings, published in the early 1980s. The story follows Garion, a farm boy who discovers that he is the prophesied instrument in a struggle between the forces of good and evil. Raised by his Aunt Pol and accompanied by the venerable sorcerer Belgarath and his daughter Polgara, Garion joins a diverse group of companions on a quest to recover the Orb of Aldur, a powerful artifact stolen by the dark god Torak. Reassembling the Orb is essential to stopping Torak’s invasion of the world.

The five novels—Pawn of Prophecy, Queen of Sorcery, Magician’s Gambit, Castle of Wizardry, and Enchanters End Game—form a continuous narrative that blends quest fantasy with mythic lore. The series is known for its accessible prose, clear moral framing, coming‑of‑age themes, and humor, as well as for establishing a template later echoed in many fantasy works.

Beyond the Belgariad itself, the setting was expanded through related works, including prequels focusing on Belgarath and Polgara, and a sequel series, The Malloreon, which follows Garion’s further adventures. The Belgariad remains a widely read example of traditional epic fantasy and helped shape the careers of its author.
