The aim is to provide reliable information on facts, conditions, or risks that may affect rights, duties, or outcomes.

The expert then prepares a written Gutachten (expert report) that documents the methods used, the findings, and the reasoning behind the conclusions. Transparency, methodological soundness, and the disclosure of potential conflicts of interest or limitations are central to quality assurance in Begutachtung.

Common fields of Begutachtung include medical assessments (for disability, fitness for work, or insurance benefits), legal and administrative evaluations (for claims, custody, or competence), technical and construction evaluations (structural safety, compliance, or damage assessment), and environmental or economic appraisals (impact studies, valuation of damages).
