Begrünungssysteme, often translated as greening systems or greening solutions, refer to the implementation of vegetation in urban or architectural contexts. These systems are designed to integrate plant life onto buildings, rooftops, facades, or within paved areas. The primary goal is to leverage the ecological and aesthetic benefits of plants in environments where they are typically absent.

There are several types of Begrünungssysteme. Extensive green roofs, for instance, are shallow and require minimal maintenance, typically planted with sedums and hardy perennials. Intensive green roofs are deeper and can support a wider variety of plant life, including shrubs and even small trees, functioning more like a traditional garden. Facade greening, or vertical gardens, can be achieved through climbing plants or modular panel systems, offering insulation and aesthetic appeal. Ground-level greening involves incorporating vegetation into urban landscaping, such as green streets or permeable paving with planting strips.

The advantages of Begrünungssysteme are multifaceted. They contribute to urban biodiversity by providing habitats for insects and birds. They also help mitigate the urban heat island effect through evapotranspiration, cooling surrounding areas. Furthermore, green roofs and facades can improve building insulation, reducing energy consumption for heating and cooling.
