Begräbnis

Begräbnis is the formal German term for the burial ceremony accompanying the disposition of a deceased person. The term is used across German-speaking countries and is typically synonymous with Beerdigung or Beisetzung, though nuances exist: Beerdigung emphasizes the act of burying; Beisetzung focuses on interment; Einäscherung is cremation, a separate option.

The process usually begins after death with documentation and a death certificate; a funeral director (Bestatter) arranges transport, coffin or casket, and coordination of services. A funeral service, often held in a church, chapel, or crematorium, includes prayers or readings, songs or music, and tributes. The body is then taken to a cemetery (Friedhof) for interment in a grave (Grab) or for the interment of an urn (Urne). In many countries, graveside rites follow the service.

Cultural and religious contexts shape the form of an Begräbnis: Christian communities often hold a church service; Jewish practice emphasizes prompt burial and a simple rite; Muslim traditions favor modest burials soon after death; cremation is common or accepted in secular contexts and in some religions, while traditional preferences vary.

Legal and administrative aspects include death notification, medical confirmation (Leichenschau) where required, and permissions for burial or cremation. Costs are borne by families or estates, and cemetery authorities regulate grave sizes and maintenance. In recent decades, cremation has risen in prevalence, while alternative options such as natural or eco-burials and direct cremation have emerged.
