The mining of bauxite is usually done through open-pit methods, which involve removing the topsoil and vegetation to access the ore body.

The processing of bauxite involves several steps, with the Bayer process being the most common for extracting alumina (aluminum oxide) from the ore. Alumina is then smelted using electrolysis in the Hall-Héroult process to produce pure aluminum metal.
