Baumsäge

Baumsäge is a German term for a saw used to cut trees and wood. It encompasses several forms designed for outdoor work, ranging from manually operated hand saws to powered devices. In forestry and arboriculture, Baumsägen are used for felling, trimming, removing branches, and cutting logs.

Manual Baumsägen include hand saws such as crosscut saws and bow saws, which rely on human energy and are common where electricity or fuel is unavailable or when a lightweight tool is needed. Two-man saws (Zweimannsäge) were historically used in logging, requiring two operators to work the blade.

Motorized Baumsägen are represented primarily by chainsaws (Kettensäge), which use a guided loop of teeth-driven chain to cut rapidly through wood. Chainsaws vary in power, bar length, and chain type, and are widely used by professional forest workers and in home carpentry. Additional power tools include hydraulic or electric saws used in specialized forestry equipment.

Typical considerations include safety and maintenance: proper PPE (helmet, eye protection, hearing protection, gloves), kickback awareness, and secure footing. Regular maintenance includes keeping the chain sharp, correct tension, lubrication with bar and chain oil, and inspections of the bar, cooling system, and fuel supply for engine-powered models.

Historical development saw transitions from manual to mechanical methods during the 19th and 20th centuries, leading to today’s diverse range of Baumsägen suited to different scales of work and environments.
