Batua

Batua is a term that refers to at least two distinct concepts, one rooted in Bengali culture and another in Basque linguistics.

In Bengali culture, batua denotes a small, ornamental purse or wallet carried by women, typically used for coins and cash. Batua purses are often handmade from textile or leather and embroidered with decorative motifs. They are associated with traditional attire in West Bengal and Bangladesh and remain a cultural symbol that appears in literature, film, and everyday life, even as fashion trends evolve.

In Basque linguistics, Euskara Batua refers to the standardized form of the Basque language. Developed in the 1960s by Euskaltzaindia (the Basque Language Academy) and other linguists, Batua was created to unify the diverse Basque dialects for education, media, and public administration. It serves as the basis for Basque-language instruction and is widely used in the Basque Autonomous Community and in parts of Navarre, where Basque is co-official.
