Batmans

Batmans is a term used to refer to the various characters who have assumed the Batman identity within DC Comics and related media. The phrase usually denotes the mantle of Batman as depicted across different storylines, timelines, and alternate universes, rather than a single, fixed character.

Batman was created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger and first appeared in Detective Comics #27 in 1939. The character is a vigilante operating in Gotham City who fights crime using detective prowess, physical conditioning, martial arts, and an array of gadgets and vehicles. He has no superhuman powers and relies on intellect, preparation, and fear as part of his crime-fighting philosophy; the Batman persona is closely tied to a secret identity, typically Bruce Wayne, a wealthy industrialist and philanthropist.

The most enduring Batman is Bruce Wayne, the franchise’s core version. Throughout comics and media, others have taken the mantle, including Dick Grayson, who briefly served as Batman; Jean-Paul Valley (Azrael) during a notable storyline; Terry McGinnis, the Batman of the future in Batman Beyond; and Tim Drake in certain alternate timelines. In various continuities and multiverses there are additional versions and interpretations of the character who operate as Batman.
