Bathhouse

A bathhouse is a building or room where people bathe for hygiene, relaxation, or socializing. They traditionally provide heated spaces, pools or tubs at various temperatures, steam or dry heat rooms, and changing areas. In many cultures, bathhouses serve hygienic, therapeutic, and ceremonial purposes beyond simple washing.

Historically, public bathhouses were central features of urban life in many civilizations. Ancient Rome and Greece built extensive bath networks with caldaria (hot baths), frigidaria (cold baths), and palaestrae for exercise, often combining bathing with social and cultural activities. In medieval Europe, public baths declined or disappeared in many places due to religious opposition and concerns about disease, though some towns maintained facilities. The modern revival of public baths and hydrotherapy began in the 18th to 19th centuries, leading to urban bathhouses and spa towns that emphasized health, leisure, and social space.

Regional variants include the hammam, or Turkish bath, common across the Islamic world, with a sequence of heated rooms and washing rituals; Onsen and Sento refer to Japan’s hot springs and public bathhouses, often with gender-segregated spaces and etiquette emphasizing cleanliness. In Russia, the banya features steam and often venik rubbing with birch branches, while Nordic traditions emphasize saunas, sometimes followed by cold plunges. Western bathhouses and spas typically blend historical architecture with modern wellness facilities, offering swimming pools, steam rooms, saunas, and treatments.

Etiquette and operation vary, but common practices include thorough washing before entering baths, nudity norms or towel-coverage, and gender-segregated or time-limited access. Bathhouses continue to function as municipal facilities, private clubs, or wellness centers, reflecting hygiene, culture, and social tradition across regions.
