Most basketballs are made of leather or composite materials and feature a pebble-grain surface to improve grip. The surface is usually formed from eight panels joined by internal seams, and the inflation valve is located on the exterior.

Official ball brand and spec are determined by the league. The NBA currently designates its own official game ball supplier, with Wilson as the brand for its professional games. Other leagues and levels have used brands such as Spalding, Molten, and Wilson, depending on contractual arrangements. Indoor balls are optimized for controlled bounce on hardwood, while outdoor variants use tougher surfaces to resist wear.
