Basisschicht

Basisschicht is a Dutch term that translates roughly to base layer or primer. It refers to the initial layer in a system of layers and is used in several disciplines. Depending on the context, it is often interchangeable with grondlaag or primer.

In painting, coatings and construction, the basisschicht is the first coat applied to a surface. It seals irregularities, blocks stains, improves adhesion and provides a uniform substrate for topcoats. The choice of material and finish depends on the surface and the final colour or protection required.

In road and civil engineering, the basisschicht refers to the base layer of pavement between the subgrade and the wearing course. It distributes loads, aids drainage and reduces deformation. It is usually manufactured from crushed stone or gravel and is laid and compacted to specifications before the asphalt or concrete surface is installed.

In clothing and outdoor gear, the term is used for the base layer worn next to the skin. This basisschicht regulates moisture, provides insulation and helps thermal comfort. Materials range from merino wool to synthetic fibres, selected for wickability and warmth.
