Basebandlähetystä

Basebandlähetystä, or baseband transmission, is a method of transmitting a signal without modulation onto a carrier wave. In this process, the digital signal directly modulates the transmission medium, which is typically a cable. This means the signal occupies the lowest frequency band, hence the term "baseband." Baseband transmission is characterized by its simplicity and efficiency for transmitting digital data over short to medium distances.

A key feature of baseband transmission is that only one signal can be transmitted on the medium at any given time. This is in contrast to broadband transmission, which uses modulation to divide the medium into multiple frequency channels, allowing for simultaneous transmission of multiple signals. Common examples of baseband transmission include Ethernet cables used in local area networks (LANs) and serial communication interfaces. The signal is sent as a series of voltage pulses that represent the binary data.

The advantages of baseband transmission include lower cost and simpler implementation compared to broadband systems. It is well-suited for applications where high bandwidth is not critically needed over very long distances. However, the lack of multiplexing capabilities means that the entire bandwidth of the medium is dedicated to a single data stream. This can limit the overall capacity of the network if multiple users or services need to share the same physical medium. The effective range of baseband transmission is also limited, often requiring repeaters for longer distances to regenerate the signal.
