Basay

Basay is a municipality located in the province of Compostela Valley, Philippines. As of the 2020 census, it has a population of 33,455 people. The municipality covers a total area of 126.47 square kilometers, making it one of the smaller municipalities in the province.

Basay is primarily an agricultural town, with a focus on farming and livestock production. The main crops grown in the area are rice, corn, and sugarcane. The municipality is also home to several forests, including the Mount Matutum National Park, a protected area known for its unique biodiversity.

The town has a relatively long history, with development dating back to the early colonial period. It was first established as a carved out municipality from the nearby town of Mabini in 1918. Basay was named after the Basay River, which serves as the main source of water for the municipality's irrigation systems.

Basay is also known for its fiestas, particularly the Patron Saint of the town, San Guillermo de Aquitania. The town celebrates its patron saint's feast day every year with a festive parade, festivals, and other activities. The town has also a smaller part in the province of Butuan City.

Basay faces challenges related to poverty and limited access to infrastructure, including roads and healthcare facilities. Efforts are being made to improve the living conditions of residents in the area.
