Barnboksbild is a Swedish term that refers to the visual art produced for children's books. It encompasses illustration inside the book, including character design, environment, and cover art, as well as the overall visual language that accompanies the text. The goal is to support the story, aid comprehension for young readers, and evoke mood and emotion.

This field has a long tradition in Swedish children's literature. Early 20th-century illustrators such as Elsa Beskow and John Bauer helped shape a distinctly Nordic visual idiom—natural color palettes, folkloric motifs, and a blend of whimsy and realism.

Over time, barnboksbild has broadened to include modern, experimental, and digital techniques, while still relying on the synergy between image and text. Artists work in various media, including watercolor, ink drawing, wood engraving, and, in contemporary practice, digital painting and mixed media.

The format includes picture books (bildböcker), early readers with integrated illustrations, and illustrated chapter books, as well as cover design and endpapers that establish the aesthetic of the work.

In education and culture, barnboksbild plays a key role in developing literacy, language, and visual literacy; it reflects and shapes cultural norms and values, and it is a subject of academic study within children's literature and art history.
