Barnavårdscentralen, often abbreviated as BVC, is a cornerstone of Sweden's child healthcare system. It provides free, accessible, and preventive healthcare for children from birth up to their school enrollment. The primary goal of BVC is to promote children's health and development, identify potential problems early, and support parents in their role.

Each BVC is typically staffed by a public health nurse (distriktssköterska) and often a pediatrician or doctor, along with other healthcare professionals. They offer a range of services, including regular health check-ups, vaccinations according to the national program, developmental assessments, and counseling. These check-ups monitor a child's growth, weight, hearing, vision, and general well-being.

Parents are encouraged to establish a relationship with their local BVC early in their child's life. The public health nurses act as key points of contact, offering advice on feeding, sleeping, parenting challenges, and answering any questions or concerns parents may have. BVC also plays a crucial role in identifying potential developmental delays, behavioral issues, or medical conditions, facilitating early intervention and referral to specialized services when necessary.
