Barleyseed refers to the seed of the barley plant, Hordeum vulgare. Barley is a temperate cereal in the grass family Poaceae and is cultivated for human consumption, animal feed, and industrial uses such as malting for beer and whiskey. The seed consists of the embryo, endosperm, and protective coats—the seed coat (testa) and the pericarp. In hulled barley, the husk remains attached to the grain after threshing; hulless varieties produce kernels that shed their husk more readily during processing.
