Barabási Albert is a Hungarian-American physicist and professor known for his pioneering work on network science. He is a distinguished professor of physics at Northeastern University and a faculty member at the Center for Complex Network Research. His research focuses on the study of complex systems, particularly the structure and dynamics of networks, from the internet and social networks to biological and economic systems.

Born in 1967 in Târgu Mureș, Romania, Barabási received his education in Hungary before moving to the United States. He is a leading figure in the development of network science as an interdisciplinary field. A significant contribution is his work on scale-free networks, which he co-developed with Réka Albert. This research demonstrated that many real-world networks do not follow a random distribution of connections but rather exhibit a power-law degree distribution, meaning a few highly connected nodes (hubs) exist alongside many nodes with few connections.

Barabási is also known for the Barabási-Albert model, a mathematical model that explains how scale-free networks can grow. This model, which incorporates preferential attachment (new nodes tend to connect to existing nodes that are already well-connected), has been influential in understanding network evolution. He has authored several influential books, including "Linked: The New Science of Networks" and "Network Science," which have popularized the field for both academic and general audiences. His work has had a profound impact on understanding the underlying principles of interconnected systems across various disciplines.
