Banpo

Banpo is a name used for several places and sites in East Asia, most notably in South Korea and China. In urban Korea, Banpo refers to a neighborhood in the Seocho District of Seoul and to landmarks along the Han River. In China, Banpo is associated with an important Neolithic archaeological site near Xi'an in Shaanxi Province.

In Seoul, Banpo-dong is a residential and commercial neighborhood located along the Han River. The area is known for its riverside parks, access to the riverfront, and proximity to the city’s central districts. The Banpo area is also linked to a major bridge across the Han River and to riverfront attractions that draw visitors for leisure and recreation.

Banpo Bridge, part of the Banpo area’s landmarks, spans the Han River and connects the Seocho and Songpa districts. The bridge features the Moonlight Rainbow Fountain, a large display of water jets and lighting that runs along its length. Introduced in 2009, the fountain has been described as one of the world’s longest bridge fountains and has become a popular evening attraction during warmer months.

In China, Banpo refers to the Banpo Site, an early Neolithic settlement located near Xi'an. Excavations in the mid-20th century uncovered a village of dwellings, pottery kilns, and tombs associated with the Yangshao culture. The site provides important evidence about early farming communities and painted pottery, and the Banpo Museum preserves and presents artifacts for public education and research.
