Bankstown

Bankstown is a suburb of Sydney, Australia, located 16 kilometres (10 miles) south-west of the Sydney central business district. It is part of the Canterbury-Bankstown council. Bankstown is a large, multicultural area with a significant population and a diverse range of commercial and residential activities.

Historically, the area was inhabited by the Bidjigal people of the Eora Nation prior to European settlement. The suburb was named after William Bankes, a friend of Governor Arthur Phillip, and was officially gazetted in 1840. Over time, Bankstown grew from a rural outpost into a significant urban centre, particularly after World War II with the establishment of post-war housing and increased migration.

The commercial heart of Bankstown is centred around Bankstown Central, a major shopping centre, and a busy railway station which is a significant transport hub for the region.
