Bankklem

Bankklem is the Dutch term for a bench clamp, a utility device used to secure a workpiece to a workbench during cutting, shaping, filing, drilling or assembly. It is a common tool in carpentry, metalworking and shop environments, enabling two-handed work and repeated operations with stability.

A bankklem typically consists of a fixed jaw attached to the bench and a movable jaw that is driven toward the fixed jaw by a screw mechanism or a wedge. The clamping pressure can be adjusted to suit different materials and tasks, and many models include removable jaw pads to protect delicate surfaces. Some bench clamps are designed to be mounted on the front edge of the bench, while others may be integrated into a larger vise system or mounted freestanding on the work surface.

There are several variations of bankklem. Woodworking benches often use woodworking vises with wooden or plastic jaw inserts, while metalworking setups may favor heavier, hardened jaws and larger threaded screws. Quick-release or swivel-jaw variants exist to improve access to the workpiece, and some clamps are designed for specific tasks such as holding long boards, dowels, or pipe work.

In practice, a bankklem is used to secure a workpiece firmly without requiring external helpers. Proper use involves selecting appropriate jaw surfaces, aligning the workpiece to avoid tipping, and not overtightening to prevent damage to the material. Maintenance includes keeping the screw clean and lubricated, inspecting for wear, and periodically replacing worn jaws or pads.
