Ballongkatetere

Ballongkatetere, often referred to as Foley catheters, are medical devices used to drain urine from the bladder. They are characterized by a flexible tube that is inserted into the bladder through the urethra. A small balloon at the tip of the catheter is inflated once inside the bladder, securing the catheter in place and preventing it from slipping out. This balloon is typically filled with sterile water or saline.

The primary purpose of a ballongkateter is to manage urinary retention, a condition where the bladder cannot be emptied completely. This can be caused by various factors, including enlarged prostate in men, urinary tract infections, neurological conditions, or after certain surgical procedures. They are also used for continuous monitoring of urine output in critically ill patients or to facilitate wound healing by keeping the perineal area dry.

Insertion of a ballongkateter is a sterile procedure performed by trained healthcare professionals to minimize the risk of infection. Once in place, the catheter is usually connected to a drainage bag that collects the urine. The duration for which a catheter is kept in place varies depending on the medical indication and the patient's condition. Prolonged catheterization can increase the risk of complications such as urinary tract infections, bladder spasms, and urethral trauma. Regular care and monitoring are essential to ensure patient comfort and to detect any potential issues early. Removal of the catheter involves deflating the balloon and gently withdrawing the tube.
