Ballastige

Ballastige is a term used in certain contexts to describe the act or state of being filled with ballast. Ballast itself is material that is used to provide stability to a vehicle, such as a ship or hot air balloon, or to provide weight for a structure. In maritime usage, ballast is typically water taken into a ship's tanks to improve its stability when it is not carrying cargo. Historically, ships also used solid materials like stones or sand as ballast.

The term ballastige, while not as common as "ballasting," directly refers to the process of adding or adjusting ballast. For example, a ship undergoing ballastige would be taking on or discharging ballast water to achieve the desired trim and stability. In the context of hot air balloons, ballastige might refer to the addition of sandbags or water to the basket to manage the balloon's weight and altitude control during flight.

Beyond transportation, the concept of ballastige can sometimes be applied more broadly to any situation where weight is intentionally added for stabilization or to anchor something. This could include the ballast used in railway tracks to support the sleepers and rails, or the counterweights in certain industrial machinery.
