Balkline
Balkline is a historical cue sport in the carom billiards family. Originating in the 19th century, it was developed to curb long, unchallenged runs in straight-rail play by introducing field divisions on the playing surface. The table is marked with balk lines that create a series of zones, or balk regions, across the surface. The exact arrangement and number of lines vary by variant, but the common feature is that play proceeds under zone-based constraints that affect how points can be scored.
In a typical balkline game, players attempt to carom the cue ball off the other two balls
Historically, balkline enjoyed popularity in Europe during the late 1800s and early 1900s alongside straight rail
