Balearach

Balearach is a fictional archipelago and autonomous region in the western Mediterranean, created for worldbuilding and used in various works of fiction and games. The name and setting are distinct from the real Balearic Islands, though the term draws on similar Mediterranean seafaring imagery.

The archipelago consists of five main islands and numerous islets, with a coastline of irregular inlets, coves and cliffs. The terrain ranges from limestone karst to forested hills. The region's area is roughly 2,200 square kilometers, with a population around 350,000. The climate is Mediterranean: hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The sea waters are clear; biodiversity includes pine, olive groves, and seagrass meadows.

Human settlement dates back to ancient traders; medieval Balearach developed as a maritime trading relay between the mainland and island kingdoms. In the 19th century it joined the Marelia federation, gaining regional autonomous status in the early 20th century and establishing its own parliament.

Balearach operates as an autonomous region with its own regional parliament and governor, while remaining part of the Marelia federation. The capital is Nova Baleara. Official languages are Balearish and Spanish; English is commonly used in tourism and business. The regional government handles education, transport, and local planning, while defense and foreign policy are handled federally.

The economy relies on tourism, fishing, shipbuilding, and renewable energy projects, including wind and tidal power. Cultural life centers on maritime traditions, coastal cuisine, and seasonal festivals such as the Sea Harvest Festival and the Mid-Summer Regatta.
