Bakteriyofajlar, also known as bacteriophages, are viruses that infect and replicate within bacteria. The term "bakteriyofaj" is derived from Greek words meaning "bacteria eater." These viruses are composed of a nucleic acid core, either DNA or RNA, surrounded by a protein coat called a capsid. Some bacteriophages also have a complex structure with a tail and other components that aid in infection.

Bacteriophages are highly abundant in the environment, particularly in areas with high bacterial populations, such as soil, water, and the human gut. They play a significant role in bacterial population control and genetic diversity through processes like lysis and lysogeny. In lysis, the phage replicates within the bacterial host and eventually causes the host cell to burst, releasing new phage particles. In lysogeny, the phage DNA integrates into the bacterial genome, where it can remain dormant or occasionally express genes that alter bacterial behavior.

The discovery of bacteriophages dates back to the early 20th century, with independent observations by Frederick Twort and Félix d'Hérelle. D'Hérelle coined the term "bacteriophage" and pioneered their use in phage therapy, a treatment method that uses phages to target and destroy bacterial infections. This approach has seen renewed interest due to the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Bacteriophages have diverse shapes and sizes, ranging from simple icosahedral structures to complex structures with tails and base plates. Their specificity for particular bacterial strains makes them valuable tools in research, biotechnology, and medicine. They are used in various applications, including bacterial typing, gene transfer, and as vectors in genetic engineering. Despite their potential, the use of bacteriophages in therapy is still subject to regulatory and safety considerations.
