The word combines Badeteich, the standard term for such ponds, with the plural ending -en, and may be used to refer to several individual sites or to the concept as a whole. These ponds can be natural depressions that collect groundwater or rainwater, or they may be engineered basins integrated into parks, riverbanks, or urban waterfronts.
