Backband

Backband is a term used in woodworking and decorative arts to describe a narrow molding or trim that is applied to the edge of a frame, panel, or piece of cabinetry. It serves as a secondary profile that adds depth, defines boundaries, and helps conceal joints where different elements meet. The backband is typically mounted along the back edge or inner edge of the main molding, producing a layered, finished appearance.

Construction and installation often involve wood, but backband profiles may also be reproduced in composite or resin materials. The molding is shaped into small profiles—such as ovolo, cavetto, bead, or other curved forms—and attached with nails, brads, or glue. It may be set into a rabbet or dado to sit flush with adjacent surfaces, ensuring a smooth transition between the frame and the surrounding structure.
