Business Process Management platforms (BPMPlattformen) are software solutions designed to support the design, execution, monitoring and optimization of business processes within an organization. They provide a central environment where process models can be created using graphical notations such as BPMN 2.0, and are then bound to workflows that can be run by a workflow engine. The platforms often include features for case management, human task management, integration with enterprise applications, and analytics.

Key functionalities of BPMPlattformen include process modelling, simulation, execution, monitoring and reporting. Process modelling allows users to diagram processes in a visual format. The workflow engine executes the defined steps, managing both human and automated tasks. There are mainly two types of BPMPlattformen: traditional workflow engines and full‑featured platforms that combine workflow with case management and business rules. Traditional engines are typically rule‑based and deterministic, whereas full‑featured platforms offer more adaptability for complex, semi‑structured processes. Open‑source options such as Camunda, Activiti and jBPM coexist with commercial products like IBM BPM, Pegasystems BPM, and Appian BPM.
