BPMNtyyppisiin

BPMNtyyppisiin is a Finnish term used in discussions of Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) to refer to the typology or types of elements that can appear in a BPMN diagram. In Finnish BPMN literature it describes how different model components are categorized and constrained within a process model.

The official BPMN 2.0 specification defines several broad element types that form the basis of BPMNtyyppisiin. The main categories are Flow Objects (Events, Activities, Gateways), Connecting Objects (Sequence Flow, Message Flow, Association), Data (Data Objects and Data Stores with Data Associations), Swimlanes (Pools and Lanes), and Artifacts (Annotations and Groups). Within these categories, subtypes exist that determine behavior and semantics, such as Start, Intermediate, and End Events; Task and Sub-Process under Activities; and Exclusive, Inclusive, Parallel, Event-based, and Complex Gateways.

Events describe occurrences that affect the flow of the process, while Activities represent work performed. Gateways control branching and convergence of paths. Data-related elements model information used or produced by the process. Swimlanes organize the model to reflect organizational responsibilities. Artifacts provide additional context or grouping without altering the flow itself. Together, BPMNtyyppisiin enables modelers to represent process structure, control flow, data, and collaboration in a standardized way.

In practice, practitioners use BPMNtyyppisiin to ensure clarity, consistency, and tool compatibility across diagrams. Modeling tools validate element types and their connections according to BPMN rules, and training materials emphasize correct usage of each typological category. The term is most common in Finnish-language BPMN discussions, while internationally the concept is referred to as BPMN element types or BPMN concepts.
