BIOSjärjestelmän, which translates to BIOS System in English, refers to the basic input/output system found on most modern computers. It is a firmware program that is stored on a chip on the motherboard. When a computer is turned on, the BIOS is the first software that runs. Its primary function is to initialize and test the system hardware components, such as the CPU, RAM, and graphics card, and then load the operating system from a storage device.

The BIOS also contains various settings that allow users to configure hardware behavior. These settings can include boot order, system time and date, and enable or disable specific hardware devices. While traditional BIOS is still present on some older systems, most modern computers use UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface), which is a more advanced successor to BIOS offering features like a graphical interface, faster boot times, and support for larger hard drives. However, the term BIOS is often used colloquially to refer to this initial startup firmware regardless of whether it is a legacy BIOS or UEFI.
