The name blends the abbreviations BC (Before Christ) and BCE (Before Common Era) with the Finnish word aikakausia, meaning era, producing a label that foregrounds the continuity between the two dating conventions.

Usage varies, but BCBCEaikakausia is generally applied to describe the broad pre-Common Era period, roughly from the early first millennium BCE up to the point of transition around 1 CE. Because there is no year zero in the traditional BC/BCE system, the era ends with 1 BCE transitioning to 1 CE in the Common Era. Boundaries are not fixed and depend on regional chronologies and scholarly aims.
