Axim

Axim is a coastal town in the Western Region of Ghana. It serves as the capital of the Axim Municipality, an administrative district along the Atlantic Ocean near the Ankobra River estuary. The town is part of the region’s coastal belt and lies at the intersection of fishing communities and inland agricultural districts.

Historically, Axim developed as a trading post during the colonial era. Fort St. Anthony, a Dutch fort dating to the 17th century, remains a prominent landmark and a focal point for local tourism. The fort and related coastal sites reflect the area’s role in regional trade and Atlantic maritime activity.

The economy of Axim is based on fishing, small-scale agriculture, and local trade. Fishing provides livelihood for many residents, while nearby farms produce crops such as cocoa, palm oil, and cassava. The town has markets that serve surrounding communities, and small businesses cater to residents and visitors. The population is predominantly Akan, with Fante as a commonly spoken language, and religious practices include Christianity and Islam.

Axim is connected to other towns by road and serves as a gateway to nearby beaches, river estuaries, and historic sites.
