Awoamefias

Awoamefias refers to the paramount chiefs of the Anlo Ewe people, a significant ethnic group in Ghana and Togo. The title "Awoamefia" literally translates to "father of the land" or "one who has come to the land," signifying their ancestral authority and leadership role. The current Awoamefia is Togbe Sri III, who ascended to the throne in 2000.

The Awoamefias traditionally reside in Anloga, the historic capital of the Anlo State. Their stool is considered sacred and is a powerful symbol of unity and identity for the Anlo people. The Awoamefia is not only a political leader but also a spiritual and cultural custodian, playing a crucial role in preserving Anlo traditions, customs, and religious practices. They preside over important festivals, such as the Hogbetsotso Za festival, which commemorates the migration of the Anlo Ewe people from Notsie in present-day Togo.

Historically, the Anlo State, led by its Awoamefias, wielded considerable influence in the region, engaging in trade and diplomacy with neighboring states and European colonial powers. The office of the Awoamefia is hereditary, passed down through a specific royal lineage.
