Avståndsmetriken, or distance metric in English, is a fundamental concept in mathematics, particularly in the field of metric spaces. It is a function that defines a "distance" or "separation" between any two elements of a set. For a function d to be considered a distance metric on a set X, it must satisfy four specific properties for any elements x, y, and z in X:

1. Non-negativity: The distance between any two points must be greater than or equal to zero. d(x, y) >= 0.

2. Identity of indiscernibles: The distance between two points is zero if and only if the points are identical. d(x, y) = 0 if and only if x = y.

3. Symmetry: The distance from point x to point y is the same as the distance from point y to point x. d(x, y) = d(y, x).

4. Triangle inequality: The distance from point x to point z is less than or equal to the sum of the distances from point x to point y and from point y to point z. d(x, z) <= d(x, y) + d(y, z).

These properties ensure that the concept of distance behaves in a way that aligns with our intuitive understanding of separation. Common examples of distance metrics include the Euclidean distance, often used in geometry, and the Manhattan distance, which represents the distance a taxi would travel in a grid-like city.
