Avokypärä

Avokypärä refers to a type of helmet designed to protect the head, often used in activities where impacts are a concern. The term "avokypärä" is Finnish and directly translates to "open helmet." This distinguishes it from full-face helmets that cover more of the head and face. Open helmets typically provide protection for the skull and sometimes the forehead and ears, while leaving the face exposed.

These helmets are commonly found in sports such as cycling, skateboarding, skiing, and snowboarding. They are also used in certain types of construction work or other professions where head protection is necessary but a full-face helmet might impede vision or communication. The design prioritizes mobility and a wider field of vision.

The construction of an avokypärä usually involves a hard outer shell made from materials like polycarbonate or ABS plastic, designed to absorb and distribute impact forces. Inside, there is typically a layer of shock-absorbing foam, often expanded polystyrene (EPS), which compresses upon impact to further cushion the head. Many open helmets also feature adjustable straps and padding to ensure a secure and comfortable fit for the wearer. Ventilation is also a key consideration in many designs, with vents incorporated to allow airflow and prevent overheating.
