Avioseek

Avioseek is a term used to describe an approach and software abstraction for fast, precise seeking within large aviation-related audio-visual streams and archives. It is employed in contexts such as in-flight entertainment, cockpit video playback, and maintenance documentation where users need to jump to a specific moment quickly. The concept is not part of a single universal standard.

The core mechanism relies on an index of seek points, such as time-stamped blocks or keyframes, annotated with byte offsets or container-specific locations. A seek request specifies a target timestamp, and the system uses the index to locate the nearest points for decoding, reducing the amount of data that must be scanned. Implementations typically support multiple codecs, streaming protocols, and adaptive buffering to cope with variable bandwidth.

Applications include on-demand video in aircraft cabins, rapid access to training or procedure videos, and efficient review of recorded flight data. Software libraries or modules labeled avioseek may expose APIs in C or C++, with bindings for other languages, and may come in both library and protocol forms. Interoperability is limited by variations in container formats and the lack of a formal standard.

Status: Avioseek originated in technical discussions about media access in aviation systems in the 2010s. It remains a conceptual or implementation-specific term rather than a widely adopted standard. As such, practitioners usually specify their own index formats and integration contracts when using avioseek in an environment.
