Avec

Avec is a French preposition meaning "with." It introduces relationships of accompaniment, instrument or means, and, more broadly, association or manner. In usage, avec governs the noun or pronoun that follows it and typically does not contract with articles.

For accompaniment, avec denotes that someone or something is present together with another person or group. Examples include Je vais avec Marie, Ils partent avec leurs amis. When used with pronouns, French employs disjunctive forms rather than the standard object pronouns: avec moi, avec toi, avec lui, avec elle, avec nous, avec vous, avec eux ou avec elles.

As a means or instrument, avec expresses the tool or method used to perform an action. Examples are Il coupe avec un couteau and Elle écrit avec un crayon.
